Psychiatric Assessment & Treatment
The Center for Student Health and Counseling provides a full range of psychiatric services,
including consultation, evaluation, and medication management. Psychiatrists are medical
doctors with specialty training in mental health.
People may be referred to a psychiatrist for a variety of reasons. Medications are often
helpful in treating symptoms of depression or anxiety. The therapists in the clinic may
refer clients to the psychiatrist who may, if appropriate, prescribe medications.
Psychiatrists are trained to detect physical illness that might cause emotional or
psychological difficulties. They can offer clarification or opinions on diagnosis and
treatment of these difficulties.
Although psychiatrists are trained in counseling and psychotherapy, psychiatric services at
the Center for Student Health and Counseling focus on assessment, consultation and case
management.
