CPR and First Aid Courses

The AHA (American Heart Association) developed the Heartsaver AED course curriculum to achieve one primary goal: to improve rates of survival from sudden cardiac arrest by strengthening the early access, early CPR, and early defibrillation links in the Chain of Survival in every community. The course teaches the importance of calling 911, improved CPR skills, and use of AED's (Automated External Defibrillators) by witnesses to the arrest. This course will provide you with certification in CPR and AED use for Adults.

The Heartsaver AED program targets all lay responders, such as security personnel, employees in the work place, family members of patients at high risk for sudden cardiac death, and other laypersons. These responders are trained in the use of CPR, barrier devices, relief of FBAO (Foreign Body Airway Obstruction), and automated external defibrillation.

PSU runs a public access defibrillation (PAD) program, with AEDs placed throughout campus. You can follow the link to see a map of where the AEDs are located. An Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) is used in conjunction with cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to dramatically improve the survival rate of a person who has gone into cardiac arrest. An AED is a device that administers an electric shock through the chest wall to the heart. The device is able to assess the patient's heart rhythm, judge whether defibrillation is needed, and then administer an appropriate level of shock. Audible and visual prompts guide the user through the process. A number of PSU staff and faculty are trained to use an AED in case of emergency, and PSU is proud to be able to provide this life saving tool on campus.

This 3 1/2 to 4 hour program involves multiple learning activities, including a slide presentation, a videotaped overview of AED use, videotaped skills demonstration and practice, instructor-led practice scenarios, and formal knowledge and skills evaluation.

We also offer a First Aid course, also using the American Heart Association curriculum, that runs aprox. 3 hours. It is also offered as a comprehensive class which includes CPR/AED. This comprehensive course runs anywhere between 6-8 hours. The purpose of the Heartsaver First Aid course is to teach rescuers the knowledge and skills they need to recognize emergencies and give first aid. Although the first aid presented in this course can be used in any setting, the course was specifically designed for emergencies occurring in the workplace.

Please note that there is a fee of $35.00 max per person for materials (fee could be lower based on cost of materials).
